Biden pushes members of his party to fund for infrastructure

Image
U.S. President Joe Biden and his top aides on Tuesday pushed members of his own party to fund not just infrastructure but his broader agenda as talks over bills for both intensified. Biden met privately with lawmakers, including conservative Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin, who have balked at the size of the spending packages under consideration. Those meetings at the White House came as Congress wrestled over a $1 trillion roads, bridges and pipes bill that has drawn support from some Democrats and Republicans, as well as separate legislation making $3.5 trillion of investments in childcare, healthcare and housings. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, told reporters after a meeting with Sinema ended without an apparent final agreement that the two Democrats had "agreed that we are at a pivotal moment." Biden, she said, "asked his team to follow up later this afternoon with her directly to continue the conversation" but decline...

Biden nominates 9 people to serve as U.S. top federal prosecutors

Image
President Joe Biden on Tuesday nominated a slate of nine people to serve as U.S. attorneys, including several who, if confirmed, would become the first Black women to serve as the top federal prosecutors in their districts. Biden has in total nominated 25 people to run some of the 93 U.S. attorneys' offices nationally. His latest picks would lead federal prosecutors' offices in Colorado, Hawaii, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The White House said confirming the nominees was important to its efforts to combat gun violence and other violent crime. The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday reported that the number of murders in the United States jumped nearly 30% in 2020. Tuesday's nominees include Sandra Hairston, who has been the acting U.S. attorney in the Middle District of North Carolina since March, and Delia Smith, a longtime prosecutor nominated to run the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Virgin Islands. Republican lawmakers blast general Mark Milley's calls with China

Image
General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, fended off perhaps the most personal and direct attacks from lawmakers of his career on Tuesday as Republicans blasted his calls with China and his interviews for books critical of Donald Trump's presidency. Milley, 63, was unshaken as Republicans called for his resignation during an already contentious hearing that was meant to focus on the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan - but repeatedly swerved into questions regarding the general. When asked, Milley acknowledged talking to Washington Post author Bob Woodward for a book that showcased Milley's role trying to avert a crisis over apparent Chinese fears that Trump might attack Beijing in his final months in office. The book detailed supposedly "secret" calls with General Li Zuocheng of the People's Liberation Army on Oct. 30, 2020 and again on Jan. 8, and said Milley had promised to warn China first if he were ordered to attack. Mille...

Al Gore vindicates UK government over soaring energy costs

Image
Ministers last week indicated they expected private sector suppliers to rescue rivals that have gone bust due to the surge in gas prices, without state support. Now Generation Investment Management, co-founded by the former U.S. vice president, is injecting $600 million into British power group Octopus. It’s not necessarily a template for future deals, though. Despite being loss-making and only 5 years old, Octopus is emerging from the energy crunch as a potential winner. Unlike smaller providers it locks in long-term power costs, reducing its exposure to the UK spot electricity market where prices for next-month delivery have quadrupled since March. On Sunday Octopus took over 580,000 customers of failed Avro Energy, committing to supply them with power even though wholesale prices are way above the maximum annual rate regulators allow it to charge. The company shouldn’t ultimately need Generation’s cash to fund the deal, though. The UK system lets Octopus recoup the costs...

North Korea fires missiles to the Sea of East coast>>>Military said

Image
North Korea fired a missile towards the sea off its east coast on Tuesday, South Korea's military said, as Pyongyang called on the United States and South Korea to scrap their "double standards" on weapons programmes to restart talks. The missile was launched from the central north province of Jagang at around 6:40 a.m. (2140 GMT), the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Japan's defence ministry said it appeared to be a ballistic missile, without elaborating. The latest test underscored the steady development of North Korea's weapons systems, raising the stakes for stalled talks aimed at dismantling its nuclear and ballistic missile arsenals in return for U.S. sanctions relief. The launch came just before North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations urged the United States to give up its hostile policy towards Pyongyang and said no one could deny his country's right to self defence and to test weapons. South Korea's President Moon Ja...

He made no mention of casualties and an Israeli military spokesperson had no immediate comment on the raids. 26 arrested for gang-raped in India

Image
Police in India arrested 26 men on Thursday in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl, which occurred repeatedly over a period of almost eight months. The victim was first raped on January 29 this year, said Dinkar Mukne, a junior officer with the Mandapa police in the city of Dombivli, which neighbors Mumbai in Maharashtra state. The rape was filmed, with the video then used to blackmail her repeatedly for the next eight months, said Mukne. She was allegedly raped by 33 perpetrators in total, including two teenagers, with the abuse lasting until this week. When her family -- which had so far had no idea what was happening -- found out, they brought the victim to the police station on Wednesday and filed a complaint, Mukne told CNN on Friday. The 26 men were arrested under the country's penal code, and separately under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) law, which has more severe sentences of longer jail time. Image
Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk said on Friday that thanks to new semiconductor plants that are planned or under construction, the global chip shortage that has pummelled the car industry this year should be short term in nature. "There's a lot of chip fabrication plants that are being built," Musk said during a joint session with John Elkann, the scion of Italy's Agnelli family at Italian Tech Week. "I think we will have good capacity for providing chips by next year."

Biden admin to take action against Chinese Telecoms firm Huawei>>>Raimondo

Image
U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on Thursday the Biden administration will take further action against Chinese telecoms firm Huawei (HWT.UL) if necessary, after some Republican lawmakers have pressed for more steps. Washington says Huawei is a national security threat on a variety of grounds and aggressively lobbied other countries not to use Huawei equipment in next-generation 5G networks. Citing Huawei’s ties to the Chinese government and military, Washington says this makes the company susceptible to "Chinese governmental pressure to participate in espionage."  In a Reuters interview, Raimondo was asked about Huawei and recounted how she told Republican lawmakers in January "that I wouldn’t be soft and now the proof’s in the pudding -- we haven’t been. They shouldn’t worry." Former President Donald Trump's administration added Huawei to the U.S. Entity List in May 2019. Raimondo said the list "is a really powerful tool in our toolb...

"The directors are cautious and concerned about the recent development of China Evergrande Group including certain disclosure made by China Evergrande Group on its liquidity," Chinese Estates said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. With $305 billion in liabilities, Evergrande is struggling to meet its debt obligations and investors worry that the rot could spread to creditors including banks in China and abroad. Florida legislatures to file lawsuits against doctors who violated Abortions law

Image
A Florida legislator has proposed banning most abortions in the state and allowing lawsuits against doctors who violate it, mirroring a Texas law that instituted the strictest abortion restrictions in the U.S. It wasn’t immediately clear how much support the bill would garner. The Republican-controlled Florida legislature has shown significant support for tighter abortion policies, but Governor Ron DeSantis said he hadn’t reviewed this specific proposal and the GOP House speaker was similarly noncommittal on Wednesday.

Guns fired at Ukraine Presidential aides

Image
A volley of shots was fired at a car carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's principal aide on Wednesday in what a senior official called an assassination attempt. More than 10 bullets hit the car near the village of Lesnyky, around 5 km(3 miles) outside the capital Kyiv, wounding the driver, a police statement said. It said a criminal case on suspicion of premeditated murder had been opened. A local television station said at least 19 bullet holes could be seen on the driver's side of the car. A senior lawmaker said the aide, Serhiy Shefir, was not hurt. Shefir is close to the president, leading a group of advisers. Zelenskiy, who came to power on a promise to take on the country's oligarchs and fight corruption, is currently in the United States at the U.N. General Assembly. His office said Zelenskiy had been informed and would comment shortly. Zelenskiy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the assassination attempt could be a result of the president'...

Police to search Florida wilderness for Gabby's fiance

Image
Police and FBI agents planned to resume their search of a swampy Florida wilderness for Gabby Petito's fiance on Wednesday, one day after the local coroner in Wyoming identified a body found there as the missing 22-year-old travel blogger. Police have called Brian Laundrie, 23, a "person of interest" in the case, which has captivated Americans since Petito's family reported her missing on Sept. 11. Ten days earlier Laundrie had returned home to North Port, Florida, without her from a cross-country road trip. Laundrie has not been seen since Sept. 14, when he purportedly left the family home in North Port with plans to hike alone in the nearby Carlton Reserve wilderness area. North Port police say they learned from Laundrie's family only on Friday that he had been gone for three days. At nightfall on Tuesday police and FBI agents broke off their efforts to find Laundrie in the vast, alligator-infested reserve, which has some 80 miles of hiking trails. O...

Trump sues New York times, niece over tax story

Image
Former US President Donald Trump is suing his niece and the New York Times over a 2018 article that alleged he was involved in "dubious tax schemes". The lawsuit, filed in New York, accuses Mary Trump and newspaper reporters of being "engaged in an insidious plot" to obtain confidential documents. It alleges that Ms Trump, 56, breached a settlement agreement barring her from disclosing the documents. She revealed herself as the source of the story in a tell-all memoir in 2020. Ms Trump, the daughter of Fred Trump Jr, the president's older brother who died in 1981 at the age of 42, has not yet commented on the lawsuit. Mr Trump has consistently rejected the claims made in his niece's book - Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man - and unsuccessfully sued to try to block its publication. On Tuesday, a lawsuit filed in a state court accused New York Times journalists Susanne Craig, David Barstow and Russe...

German Auto Giants place their bets on hydrogen cars

Image
Battery power may be the frontrunner to become the car technology of the future, but don't rule out the underdog hydrogen. That's the view of some major automakers, including BMW (BMWG.DE) and Audi (VOWG_p.DE), which are developing hydrogen fuel-cell passenger vehicle prototypes alongside their fleets of battery cars as part of preparations to abandon fossil fuels. They are hedging their bets, calculating that a change in political winds could shift the balance towards hydrogen in an industry shaped by early-mover Tesla's (TSLA.O) decision to take the battery-powered road to clean cars. Global auto hub Germany is in sharp focus. It is already betting billions on hydrogen fuel in sectors like steel and chemicals to meet climate targets, and closely-fought elections this month could see the Greens enter the coalition government and further push the technology. BMW is hydrogen's biggest proponent among Germany's carmakers, charting a path to a mass-market m...

Police arrest more than 60 persons in Melbourne protests

Image
Police fanned out across the centre of Australia's second-largest city of Melbourne on Wednesday in a bid to keep a lid on a third day of protests over COVID-19 lockdown curbs, as the state of Victoria recorded another rise in infections. Police made more than 60 arrests on Tuesday after more than 2,000 protesters damaged property, blocked a busy freeway and injured three police after authorities shut construction sites for two weeks to limit the spread of the diseases. Protesters again gathered in groups roaming across city streets on Wednesday despite pleas for them to remain home, but largely avoided clashes with busloads of police, while state police chief Shane Patton vowed to prevent more violence. "I'm not going to talk about the tactics we'll deploy today," Patton told media in Melbourne. "I want them to be completely unaware of what we're going to do and what capacity they may face." By early afternoon, television footage showed ...

Schumer to pass election reform Bill without Republican

Image
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer signaled to Republicans on Tuesday that if they block an upcoming election reform bill, he will look for a path around the chamber's filibuster rule to try to pass it with only Democratic support. Schumer noted that Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate who wields great power to advance or block legislation in the narrowly divided chamber, has signed on to try to secure Republican support. Congressional Democrats are reacting to at least 18 Republican-led states that have enacted laws restricting voting access this year, following Republican former President Donald Trump's false claims the 2020 election was stolen from him through widespread voting fraud. "We're going to take action to make sure we protect our democracy and fight against the disease of voter suppression, partisan gerrymandering and election subversion that is metastasizing at the state level," Schumer said. Bypassing Republicans would likely re...

Oil rises up as investors worry about global demand

Image
Oil prices rose modestly in a see-saw session on Tuesday, as concerns about the global consumption outlook counterbalanced the struggle by big OPEC producers pump enough supply to meet growing demand. Both benchmarks were at one point up by $1 per barrel, but Brent crude pared gains and was up just 32 cents to $74.24 a barrel by 11:49 a.m. EDT (1549 GMT) after falling by almost 2% on Monday. The October West Texas Intermediate (WTI) contract , which expires on Tuesday, rose 16 cents to $70.45 a barrel, after dropping 2.3% in the previous session. The more-active November contract rose 27 cents a barrel to $70.41. Brent and the more-active WTI contract earlier reached session highs of $75.18 a barrel and $71.48 per barrel, respectively. "It seems to be a very nervous trade today," said Phil Flynn, senior analyst at Price Futures group in Chicago. "It's a little bit of ongoing concerns about the potential impact of demand going forward." Prices pared g...

Bitcoin falls drastically on Tuesday

Irmiya Daniya. Cryptocurrency prices bounced off 1-1/2 month lows on Tuesday as a heavy selloff overnight linked to concerns about a possible loan default by property developer China Evergrande (3333.HK) eased slightly, but investors braced for more volatility. Bitcoin , the biggest and the best known cryptocurrency, traded around $43,000, recovering from a fall to $40,192 earlier in the session. It hit a four-month high of $52,000 on Sept 6. Smaller rival ether , the coin linked to the Ethereum blockchain, rose 1% to $3,012 after falling below $3,000 for the first time since early August. Global markets started the week on a turbulent note after fears that Evergrande's troubles could lead to a fallout for the Chinese and global economies prompted a selloff in riskier assets. "We can't take a very positive view just as yet until we get through the next few days," said Matthew Dibb, chief operating officer at crypto index fund provider Singapore-based Stack Funds. ...

Sexual assault lawsuit against Prince Andrew

Image
Britain's Prince Andrew has been served in the United States with a sexual assault lawsuit by a woman who said his conduct occurred around when his friend Jeffrey Epstein was sexually abusing her, court papers show. In a filing with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, lawyers for Virginia Giuffre said they sent the civil lawsuit to the prince's Los Angeles-based lawyer Andrew Brettler by email and FedEx, and both copies had been received by Monday morning. Under federal rules, the Duke of York has 21 days to respond or could face a default judgment. Giuffre's lawyers previously said they also served Andrew, who is Queen Elizabeth's second son, in Britain. Andrew and his lawyers have strongly denied Giuffre's claims. The 61-year-old prince has not been charged with crimes. Giuffre's Aug. 9 lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Brettler did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Giuffre, 38, accused Andrew of forcing her to have sex when she...

Trump treasurer Mnuchin raises $2 billion dollars

Image
While Mnuchin already had experience raising money and a reputation for being a savvy investor, the Trump administration’s close ties to the Middle East brought him nearer to some of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world. He traveled to the region regularly, visiting countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates before leaving the government in January. In 2018, Mnuchin was one of the first Western government officials to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, chair of the Public Investment Fund, in the wake of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. With the return to finance, Mnuchin is following a similar path as Treasury predecessors such as Tim Geithner, who went on to become president of private equity firm Warburg Pincus. Hank Paulson, the former Goldman Sachs chief executive officer who led the Treasury Department during the financial crisis, is now the executive chair of TPG Rise Climate. Former White House senior advis...

Norway to increase gas exports to Europe

Norway will allow state-controlled Equinor (EQNR.OL) and its partners to increase gas exports from two offshore fields for the next 12 months amid concerns over a shortage of European gas supplies that have sent prices soaring. Equinor, Europe's second-largest gas supplier after Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM), said on Monday the government was allowing a combined 2 billion cubic metres (bcm) increase in exports for the gas year starting Oct. 1 from the Troll and Oseberg fields. The increase corresponds to nearly 2% of Norway's annual pipeline gas exports, according to Reuters calculations. The front-month gas price at the Dutch TTF hub, a European benchmark, has more than tripled this year to record levels, driving up power prices as the winter heating season approaches with below-average levels of gas in storage. The situation is prompting Britain to consider state-backed loans to energy firms and big suppliers to ask for government support to cover the cost of taking on custo...

Search for Brian Laundrie Gabby's boyfriend intensifies.

Image
The North Port Police Department tells Fox News on Monday that it "currently has no plans to conduct a major search of the Carlton Reserve today" -- the place in Florida where authorities had been looking for Brian Laundrie over the weekend. Laundrie is a person of interest in the Gabby Petito investigation. On Sunday, authorities found a body in Wyoming that is believed to be Petito's.  "At this time, we currently believe we have exhausted all avenues in searching of the grounds there," North Port Police Public Information Officer Josh Taylor said. "Law enforcement agencies continue to search for Brian Laundrie."

Volcano erupts in LA Palma, Spain

The Canary Islands' first volcanic eruption in 50 years has forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people, including around 500 tourists, and destroyed about 100 houses, officials said on Monday. The volcano erupted on Sunday, shooting lava hundreds of metres into the air, engulfing houses and forests, and sending molten rock towards the Atlantic Ocean over a sparsely populated area of La Palma, the most northwestern island in the Canaries archipelago. No fatalities have been reported but the volcano was still active on Monday. A Reuters reporter saw heavy smoke coming from the volcano and houses burning. Officials said they were hopeful they would not need to evacuate any more people. "The lava is moving towards the coast and the damage will be material. According to experts there are about 17-20 million cubic metres of lava," regional president Angel Victor Torres told Cadena Ser radio. The lava flow has destroyed about 100 houses so far, Mariano Hernandez, ...

Livingston beats Celtics, Rangers held by motherwell

Image
Celtic suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Livingston, while champions Rangers were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Motherwell in Sunday’s Scottish Premiership action. Andrew Shinnie’s first-half strike consigned Celtic to a sixth defeat in seven away games under new boss Ange Postecoglou. Shinnie, playing as a makeshift striker, got across Stephen Welsh and fired the only goal into the top corner in the 25th minute.  Livingston held on for their first league win of the season as they climbed off the bottom of the table. That cool finish was the sort of quality Celtic lacked in the final third as they failed to make their possession count, leaving them without a win in their last five games at the Tony Macaroni Arena. Rangers dropped league points at Ibrox for the first time since March 2020. On the day fans cheered the unfurling of the Premiership champions flag for the first time in a decade before kick-off, Steven Gerrard’s side saw a run of 21 home wins ended.
