#2024: Trump to contests for Presidency despite capitol charged

Image
Former US President Donald Trump has said he might run for the office of President again in 2024, the Guardian reports. He promised that he would pardon some of those charged for their part in the assault on the US Capitol last year if he was reelected in the 2024 presidential vote. Trump disclosed this at a rally on Saturday night in Conroe, Texas. “If I run, and if I win we will treat those people from January 6th fairly. We will treat them fairly. And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons because they are being treated so unfairly,” Trump said. Hundreds of Trump supporters invaded the US legislature in Washington on January 6 last year in an effort to block certification of President Joe Biden’s November 2020 election victory. Reports revealed that more than 700 people have been arrested as part of the investigation into the riot that left five people dead and the country thrown into confusion. That list grows by the day as the sprawling investigation churns ...

Again Asari-Dokubo tackles IPOB

Image
Dokubo, has again tackled the Indigenous People of Biafra and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Asari-Dokubo faulted IPOB for saying he was behind the reported extradition of its leader from Kenya. Both Asari-Dokubo and Kanu have been at the forefront of the struggle for the actualisation of Biafra.  The pair started on a relatively good note but along the line they turned into enemies despite pushing for the same course. Amid the ensuing face-off, some prominent figures formerly loyal to Kanu have switched camp for Dokubo's Biafra Customary Government . For instance, Kanu’s former deputy, Uche Mefor, is now BCG’s Head of Information and Communication. In October 2020, Asari-Dokubo claimed that the IPOB leader had derailed the Biafran struggle. He claimed with Kanu there’s no hope for Biafra, stressing that he was not representing the interest of other tribes under Biafra. In one of their landmark altercations, Asari-Dokubo in June 2020 challenged Kanu to swear if he had not bee...

Michigan schools wrongfully award students scholarships

A university in Michigan said Friday it erroneously notified students that they would receive top tuition awards, just days after another school in the state said its prospective students were mistakenly told they had won full-ride scholarships. Oakland University, north of Detroit in Rochester Hills, said in a statement that due to human error its undergraduate student application system sent email notifications to some admitted students that they were entitled to receive the school’s Platinum Presidential Scholar Award. The school said about 5,500 students received the erroneous notification. Those students have qualified for other levels of scholarship awards, according to the school, which learned of the error on Jan. 4. The award is Oakland University’s highest, but the students who received the notification don’t meet eligibility requirements for the award. The email was intended for students who had already been sent notice of their Presidential Scholar award through an official...

Nigerian Labour Congress to protest despite fuel subsidy removal

Image
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to continue with its planned nationwide rally on Thursday, despite the announcement by the Nigerian government that it would no longer remove the fuel subsidy for now. NLC Deputy President, Joe Ajaero, confirmed this during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday. He explained that the rally was aimed at sensitising Nigerians. “NLC is still standing on its position. The Federal Government didn’t say they have abolished it, they are postponing the evil day. “What we are doing is sensitisation of Nigerians on this fuel subsidy removal or so-called increase in the pump price of petroleum products,” he said. The labour leader further explained the reasons for the sensitisation, claiming that the fuel subsidy removal was about inflicting more suffering on Nigerians. “The NLC is sensitising Nigerians that this is not sustainable; that the idea of fuel subsidy is a hoax which they are using to inflict pains on Nigerians. “So, our...

Senate passed version of Electoral Act Amendment Bill

Image
The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, passed the harmonised version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The harmonised version is the final agreed version between the Senate and House of Representatives, on the amendment to Clause 84 of the bill. The direct, indirect, and consensus primary modes of nominating candidates by political parties for elections have been included. Last week, there had been a controversy after the two chambers approved different versions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021. While the Senate offered the re-amended bill for direct, indirect primaries or consensus as the procedure for the nomination of candidates by political parties for various elective positions, the House only provided direct and indirect mode. But speaking on Tuesday, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who presided over the plenary, stated that both chambers have agreed to give a clear and sufficient definition for each mode of primaries, and how they would be conducted. He explai...

Australia to boycott wechat ahead of elections

Image
Australian politicians are facing calls to boycott WeChat after Prime Minister Scott Morrison appeared to be blocked from using the Chinese social media platform. As first reported by NewsCorp, Mr Morrison’s account had been taken over and rebranded, drawing accusations of foreign interference. WeChat has become an increasingly important campaign tool for Australian politicians to connect with Chinese speaking community members. But independent researcher Alex Joske said the risks posed by the social media platform meant WeChat should no longer be relied on given the national security concerns. “Politicians in especially electorates with large Chinese speaking communities have started to view WeChat as an indispensable part of their campaigning,” he told SBS News. “[But] political parties and the government shouldn’t be letting the serious risk of political interference and surveillance through WeChat continue.”  It's understood requests by the prime minister's offi...

China limits Winter Olympic torch relay for 3-Days amid covid-19

Image
China is limiting the torch relay for the Winter Olympics to only three days amid coronavirus worries, organizers said Friday. The flame will be displayed only in enclosed venues that are deemed “safe and controllable,” according to officials. No public transit routes would be disturbed and normal life would continue for the 20 million residents of the capital, where a handful of new COVID-19 cases have been recorded over recent days. Beijing’s deputy sports director, Yang Haibin, said safety was the “top priority,” with the pandemic, venue preparations and the possibility of forest fires in Beijing’s cold, dry climate all factored in. The relay will run from Feb. 2-4, taking in the three competition areas of downtown Beijing, the suburb of Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou in the neighboring province of Hebei. The Games have already been impacted on a scale similar to that experienced by Tokyo during last year’s Summer Olympics. China says only selected spectators will be allowed t...

Taliban abduct activist, sister in Kabul

Image
—The Taliban stormed an apartment in Kabul, smashing the door in and arresting a woman rights activist and her three sisters, an eyewitness said Thursday. A Taliban statement appeared to blame the incident on a recent women’s protest, saying insulting Afghan values will no longer be tolerated. The activist, Tamana Zaryabi Paryani, was among about 25 women who took part in an anti-Taliban protest on Sunday against the compulsory Islamic headscarf, or hijab, for women. A person from the neighborhood who witnessed the arrest said about 10 armed men, claiming to be from the Taliban intelligence department, carried out the raid on Wednesday night. Shortly before she and her sisters were taken away, footage of Paryani was posted on social media, showing her frightened and breathless and screaming for help, saying the Taliban were banging on her door. “Help please, the Taliban have come to our home . . . only my sisters are home,” she is heard saying in the footage. There are othe...

Boeing 777 resumes flights to USA after 5G rollout

Image
Long-haul carrier Emirates said Thursday it will resume its Boeing 777 flights to the U.S. after halting its use of the aircraft there over concerns new 5G services in America could interfere with airplane technology that measures altitude. International carriers that rely heavily on the wide-body Boeing 777, and other Boeing aircraft, canceled early flights or switched to different planes Wednesday following warnings from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Chicago-based plane maker over possible interference with radio altimeters. The FAA gave approval late Wednesday for more types of planes to land in low visibility near 5G signals, including the Boeing 777. Among the most-affected airlines by the FAA decision was Dubai-based Emirates, a crucial East-West travel airline which flies only the 777 and the double-decker Airbus A380. Emirates said its Boeing 777 service to Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Miami, Newark, Orlando and Seattle would resume Friday. Flights to B...

U.S court rejects Trump bid to block Capitol documents release

Image
The US Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a bid by former president Donald Trump to block the release to a congressional committee of documents related to the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Citing executive privilege, Trump had sought to prevent the records held by the National Archives from being given to the panel investigating the assault on Congress by his supporters. Trump, who has been accused of fomenting the Capitol assault, had asked the nation’s highest court to stay a ruling by a federal appeals court, which rejected his efforts to keep the documents secret. But the Supreme Court, in an 8-1 vote, refused to issue a stay and upheld the lower court’s ruling, in a significant setback for the former president. Justice Clarence Thomas, a conservative, was the only justice in favor of issuing a stay. The other five conservative justices on the court — three of whom were appointed by Trump — joined the three liberals in denying the request.  The leaders of the Ho...

Some Airlines cancelled flights over 5G rollouts in USA

Image
Major international airlines canceled flights heading to the U.S. or changed the planes they’re using Wednesday, the latest complication in a dispute over concerns that new 5G mobile phone service could interfere with aircraft technology. Carriers took widely different approaches to the brewing crisis affecting international travel, from Middle Eastern airline Emirates drastically reducing its U.S.-bound flights to Air France saying it would fly as normal. It wasn’t immediately clear why the airlines made those decisions — or whether they took into account that mobile carriers AT&T and Verizon agreed this week to pause the rollout of the new high-speed wireless service near key airports. U.S. officials had said that even with the concession, there could be some cancellations and delays because of limitations of equipment on certain planes. Some airlines said Wednesday they received warnings from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration or Boeing that the plane maker’s 7...

U.S begins 1B free covid-19 tests

Image
For the first time, people across the U.S. can log on to a government website and order free, at-home COVID-19 tests. But the White House push may do little to ease the omicron surge, and experts say Washington will have to do a lot more to fix the country’s long-troubled testing system. The website, COVIDTests.gov, allows people to order four at-home tests per household, regardless of citizenship status, and have them delivered by mail. But the tests won’t arrive for seven to 12 days, after omicron cases are expected to peak in many parts of the country. The White House also announced Wednesday that it will begin making 400 million N95 masks available for free at  pharmacies and community health centers. Both initiatives represent the kind of mass government investments long seen in parts of Europe and Asia, but delayed in the U.S.

Nnamdi Kanu must not die in Detention>>> IPOB to Binta Nyako,

Image
The Indigenous People of Biafra has accused Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court for conspiring with the Department of State Services to put its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in solitary confinement. The group reiterated that Kanu had not been convicted and as such should not be tortured with the solitary cell as “stipulated under Section 2 of the Anti-torture Act of 2017, which offence attracts 25 years imprisonment upon conviction.” According to the group, Nyako has the judicial power to prevail upon the secret police to stop violating Kanu’s human rights but had decided to turn a blind eye. IPOB, however, warned that both Nyako and the DSS will have themselves to blame if Kanu died in the custody of the secret police, stressing that his health was in critical condition. In a statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, on Wednesday, IPOB said, "We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra ably led by our great and indefatigable leader M...
