Russia has banned all United Kingdom registered airlines from landing at its airports or crossing its airspace.   The Russian civil aviation regulator said on Friday. The move followed UK’s ban on the flights of Russian flag carrier, Aeroflot in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.   Virgin Atlantic and British Airways are the airlines that are most affected by the Russian decision, last night both airlines already used a southern route en route to London Heathrow where normally the airlines would use Russian (and Ukrainian) airspace.   Russia's civil aviation authority said: "This measure was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Intergovernmental Air Services Agreement between Russia and the UK as a response to unfriendly decisions by the UK aviation authorities regarding the restriction on regular flights of aircraft owned, leased or operated by a person associated with Russia or registered in Russia."   British Airways said in a statemen...

#Ukraine: what president Biden said

Image
President Joe Biden has warned Americans they will have to pay a price for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Gas prices are likely to rise. The post-World War II world order that has maintained relative peace in Europe is threatened. But Biden has also been very clear on another point: US troops will not be sent to Ukraine to take part in the conflict. When he announced sanctions against Russia for beginning its invasion on Tuesday, Biden took great care to make clear the US was not being aggressive toward Russia. "Let me be clear: These are totally defensive moves on our part. We have no intention of fighting Russia," Biden said. Earlier in February, Biden told NBC News he would not consider any scenario that included sending US troops to evacuate Americans in Ukraine. "There's not.  That's a world war when Americans and Russia start shooting at one another," he said. While Biden's clarification that US troops would not become offensively in...

Image
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over his government’s failure to publish the details of the agreement it reached with US micro-blogging giant, Twitter. Joined in the suit as Respondent is Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture. The Nigerian Government had in January lifted the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria, stating that, “Twitter has agreed to act with a respectful acknowledgement of Nigerian laws and the national culture and history.” But in the suit number FHC/L/CS/238/2022 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP is asking the court to “direct and compel President Buhari and Alhaji Lai Mohammed to release and widely publish a copy of the agreement with Twitter, and the terms and conditions of any such agreement.” In the suit, SERAP is arguing that: “It is in the interest of justice to grant this application. Publishing the agreement would en...

Sevilla beats Elche 2-0

Image
Papu Gomez broke through with an inspired second half goal as Sevilla got back to winning ways on Friday with a book 2-0 success against Elche to keep the pressure on Spanish league leaders Real Madrid. Argentine forward Gomez found the space to blast in after an impressive solo run with 20 minutes to go with new arrival Anthony Martial teeing up Rafa Mir to head in a second five minutes later. Second-placed Sevilla ended a series of three consecutive draws to move three points behind Real Madrid who play at Villarreal, sitting sixth, on Saturday. Sevilla’s run of draws had allowed Real to preserve a healthy lead at the top of the table, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s side only winning two of their last four games. Injuries had played a part in Sevilla’s dip while Ivan Rakitic missing an injury-time penalty in the goalless draw with Osasuna last weekend was particularly hard to take. Martial, who joined on loan from Manchester United in January, was supposed to provide some fres...

UK urges Australia to lift game on climate change

Image
Former UK prime minister urges Australia to lift its game on climate change Theresa May has declared Australia should pick up its climate change agenda "rather more proactively" during the former British prime minister's first visit. Former British prime minister Theresa May has criticised Australia for not being proactive enough in combating climate change while visiting the nation for the first time. The ex-Conservative Party leader, who served in the top job from 2016 to 2019 before leaving Downing Street over her failure to secure a Brexit deal, is in Australia at the invitation of the Victorian Liberal Party. Ms May appeared to take a thinly-veiled dig at the party's federal branch on Friday when alluding to the coalition government's climate change credentials during an address at a business event in Melbourne. The MP for the UK constituency of Maidenhead branded as "absolutely wrong" the recurring argument that countries must choose between tackli...

Confrontation with China not inevitable>>> Blinken

Image
Confrontation with China is not inevitable, but the United States must stand up with its allies for a rules-based system threatened by Chinese aggression, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday. Blinken was speaking shortly before a meeting with the foreign ministers of Australia, India and Japan. The four nations form the so-called “Quad,” a bloc of Indo-Pacific democracies created to counter China’s regional influence. Asked by a reporter if a confrontation with China in the Indo-Pacific was inevitable, Blinken replied: “Nothing is inevitable.” “I think we share concerns that in recent years China has been acting more aggressively at home and more aggressively in the region and indeed potentially beyond,” Blinken said. The Quad partners are united by an “affirmative vision for what the future can bring” and a “commitment to defend the rules-based system that we have spent tremendous time and effort building,” he added. Blinken’s trip is designed to reinforce A...

Image
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has asked Nigerian advertisers to update their Value-Added Tax identification numbers by February 25. Failure to do so, the social media giant said Nigeria customers risk not having their adverts displayed on the platform. This is after the Federal Government announced plans to tax foreign-based social media platforms earning money from Nigerian advertisers. The social media platform’s parent company, Meta, in an apparent bid to comply with the government regulation also requested its Nigerian customers to carry out basic requirements to help its compliance. In a statement on Thursday, Facebook said recent updates have been made to allow Nigerian customers to provide 11 or 12 digit VAT identification to pay the 7.5 percent charge. Facebook had last year announced that all advertisers from Nigeria would pay an additional 7.5 percent VAT on ad placement from January 1, 2022. Fighter jet eliminates bandit's leaders in Niger

Image
Nigerian military fighter jet eliminated some leaders of gangs of bandits and terrorists in Niger State. The bandit leaders and their 'boys', had launched violent attacks on several communities in Kontagora, Mariga and Rijau local government areas of the state. Aside from killing children, the criminals also looted shops, razed many houses and rustled over a thousand cattle. A military intelligence officer had said that it was bad weather that prevented Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jets from launching offensives against the 'rampaging' bandits.   However, the Air Component of Operation Gama Aiki on Wednesday dispatched an Alpha jet and helicopter gunship to the locations to take out the targets as the ground troops with local volunteers were moving in. Credible intelligence from locals as well as land forces had indicated the movement of several armed bandits with rustled herds of cattle along Shadadi-Maundu axis.   An intelligence source involved in the operati...

Australia to reopen border for tourists from Feb 21

Image
Australia will reopen its borders to tourists from February 21, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Monday, ending some of the world’s strictest and longest-running pandemic travel restrictions. “It’s almost two years since we took the decision to close the borders to Australia,” Morrison said after a meeting of the national security cabinet. He announced the borders will reopen to all visa holders “on the 21st of February of this year,” adding, “if you’re double vaccinated, we look forward to welcoming you back to Australia.” Australia’s borders slammed shut in March 2020 in the hope of protecting the island continent against a surging global pandemic. For most of the time since then, Australians have been barred from leaving and only a handful of visitors have been granted exemptions to enter. The rules have stranded nationals overseas, split families, hammered the country’s multi-billion-dollar tourist industry, and prompted often bitter debates about Australia’s sta...

How sexual intercourse could help prevent prostate cancer>>> Experts

Image
A sexual health expert, Omolola Adefuye, says men engaging in masturbation with the hope that ejaculating through it can help prevent prostate cancer should stop it, noting that there is no scientific evidence to back their assumption. Adefuye, a Lagos-based sex therapist, said while there are studies suggesting ejaculation during sexual intercourse could help reduce the risk of getting prostate cancer in males, there is no research indicating that engaging in masturbation has similar benefits. Also known as self-induced orgasm, masturbation is the act of stimulating, rubbing, or caressing the genitals or other parts of the body for pleasure. On the prevalence of masturbation, a 2011 survey carried out in America, showed that across age groups, more males (73.8%) reported masturbation than females (48.1%). “Among males, masturbation occurrence increased with age: at age 14 years, 62.6% of males reported at least 1 prior occurrence, whereas 80% of 17-year-old males reported ...
